This blog post is all about the classical Indonesian novel Belenggu karya Armijn Pane, which was written in the 1920s. It talks about how the story begins with a man in a desperate situation and ends with a woman who takes control of her life. The blog also includes an English translation of the book. So, read it and enjoy! 1. General Background Belenggu is the first novel ever written by Armijn Pane. It was first published in 1921 by Javanese magazine Pedaliang. The magazine collected the works of Armijn Pane at the time, which were originally published in Kwee Tek Hoay magazine (see picture below). It was collected as a book, entitled Iboe Boelan, only in 1939. This book also included two other novels by Armijn Pane: Gagak Item and Banjir Bandang Soembiar. In 1973, the novel was translated into Japanese with a title of 縄地獄 . 2. The Story The story describes the life of a young Javanese man named Raden Wijaya, who is poor and has no wife. He falls in love with his friend's daughter, but she is the daughter of the princess of Majapahit Kingdom. Therefore he can not reveal his love to her. However, one day the prince who is supposed to become the king gets married to another princess, so Wijaya suddenly becomes a candidate for crown prince! He uses this chance and asks the princess if she will marry him, but she rejects him because he does not have any land to support her financially (budi pegang tanah). Wijaya tries to make money by starting a business with his friend, but his friend is greedy and does not support Wijaya's goal. Wijaya wants to marry the princess, but he wants to get land first. After all, one of his friends gives him land, but he can not be free from another problem–love triangle! Finally he marries the princess, but the princess is unsure of whether or not she truly loves him. 3. The Title Armijn Pane named this novel "Belenggu" because it tells a story about a love relationship that is trapped by various factors (pride, class, money). The word "Belenggu" itself means tie in Indonesian. In other words, Belenggu is a novel that tells us that love is bounded by various factors, such as social status and money. In this sense, Belenggu is a story about the struggle of love between different classes. 4. The Characters The story shows how love between two different classes can also change people's lives. Here are some characters in the story: a) Raden Wijaya: He falls in love with a princess from his friend's family. However, he has no land to support her financially due to poverty. Because of this problem, he cannot reveal his true feeling for her and cannot marry her because he does not have enough power within the royal family (prince). cfa1e77820
